Can she just apply? A. Before any new member goes to camp we recommend that they do some working rallies. By seeing you at the working rallies, we can assess at what standard she is riding at and so ensures that she is put into the appropriate group and it also means that your daughter get to meet other members before camp. Also you as a parent get to meet other parents and committee members. Q. My son is worried that he is going to be the only boy at camp. A. Certainly not! Several boys have already entered, of varying ages, so he wont be alone. Q. Where do the children sleep? A At Kelsall, our second year at this venue, they sleep in tents provided by us and the tents will all be up when you all arrive on Sunday. The camp organisers decide who is sleeping where and the children are generally organised into age groups. You just have to provide bedding and an airbed or something to sleep on. Q. My child is not very confident when jumping and is worried about this already. A. This is where coming to the rallies helps. We can then make sure your child is in the right group but also your child will gain confidence in our instructors and what is expected of her. Camp is the ideal place to begin learning to jump! All the instructors are extremely experienced and will encourage every rider to work to their full potential. Dont forget that the instructors are only human and each group member can relay her/his fears and worries to that instructor and a sympathetic approach will be adopted. Q. My son/daughter knows a few members but only of his/her age group. Will all the children mix? A. All the children are divided into teams and then they compete against each of the other teams in many different activities all week, for example a rounders competition, a quiz and many others. This way all the members integrate and friendships are soon formed. It also encourages and supports the pony club ethos of teamwork and developing team spirit. The older team members will look after and help the younger members. Q. My child needs to make sure he/she visits the loo before bedtime. I dont want her/him to be embarrassed about this. A. Dont worry at all about this. We are all parents and all the children have a nightly routine. All clean their teeth, go to the loo and prepare for bed. We also dont have drinks late in the evening. If you are very concerned just mention it to the camp helpers. Your child wont even know! Q. My son has never been away from home before. Will I be allowed to visit? A. The camp organisers are all very experienced people in many fields and be assured that your child will be in safe hands! We are also parents as well and the children get to know us very well. Again they will have seen us at the rallies. We do not allow parents to visit as we have found that visits interrupt the flow of camp and also actually unsettle the children more! Talk to other parents about how their children have coped and you will soon see that actually once into the camp routine they do soon settle and are enjoying themselves. Q. How long do they ride for? A. Most of the riding sessions are between 1 and a half and 2 hours long and they ride twice each day. Q. Do we have to bring anything extra? A. Please bring a chair marked with your childs name and cutlery and crockery, (lets think of the environment). Also have a look at the camp leaflet. This clearly states everything else that you have to bring. The only other extras are a cake, (or biscuits) and casual clothes. Q. Do we need to bring our own hay? A. No. For a price of 5 per bale, haylage can be provided. (Money in a named envelope please and handed in on arrival at camp along with the medical form). However, if you want to bring your own hay you can do but please make sure you bring enough. Q. I have entered my daughter for camp and heard nothing. A. Dont panic! At the camp parents meeting on Wednesday 25th June 2008, 7pm you will receive your camp pack consisting of leaflet, letter and medical form. Assume you have a place unless you hear otherwise. Q. My child is of the right age but is only confident in an arena or controlled environment. Will this be all right? A. Oh dear. To be blunt, not really as there is a lot of riding done in the open countryside, across fields and also on the farm ride. The members are supervised at all times, however they need to be able to ride confidently in a group, riding together in open fields. The youngest group do begin in an enclosed arena at the beginning of the week in order to settle nerves and acclimatise themselves to the surroundings. Q. Can I choose shavings or straw for my pony's bedding? A. Here at Kelsall, all the bedding is straw and included in the price. However if this is a huge problem and for a veterinary reason your pony cannot be stabled on straw please contact the camp organiser. Tip if your pony eats the straw, fill a spray with a weak solution of disinfectant and water and spray Q. Can I leave my trailer at the site during the week and collect it when I pick up my child and pony at the end? A. Yes, this is not a problem as there is plenty of parking. A word of advice though, please fit your trailer with a trailer lock or lock, as it is there at your own risk. Security is not an issue at the centre but it is always best to be security conscious. Q. Can my child bring a mobile phone? A. NO!! This is for several reasons, mainly once again security as we cannot be responsible for valuables that are brought to camp with your son/daughter. We appeal to parents to support us on this issue. All The camp supervisors have mobiles and the branch mobile will be switched on 24 hours a day for messages. Any mobile phones will be confiscated and returned at the end of the week. If you have any other queries then please email the webmaster!
